The Devil card may show up in a tarot reading to ask you how comfortable you are with your shadows. Shadows- we all got them, but how many of us know what to do with them? There are many ways to think about our shadows; one is to consider them those impulses that we all get to do something we know we shouldn’t do. These are those things we know we will get in trouble for, if we get caught, and will face the consequences for doing them. But we don’t care. We do it anyway, or at the very least are incredibly tempted to.

To be in control of this side of ourselves, to control the Devil we need to notice and acknowledge these impulses as they arise, and ponder if it is really that big of a deal? Is it really so terrible to live it up a little and have some dark fun? Who ever said we all have to be so perfect all the time? Sometimes doing the wrong thing sparks something in us that reminds us of our humanity. Don’t commit crimes or do such things that will bring harm or injury to others, but little rules here and there? Why not break them once in awhile?

Establish an iota of control where you might not otherwise have any. Make yourself laugh. Create a secret that only you know. Be human. We all have a dark side, just as sure as we all have a light side. If we never delve into our dark side, an imbalance will be the result. Stay balanced in a controlled way. We all have to be strong a lot of the time. Some people though, need to be Hercules. They have to in order to be there for others who are not able to find or tap into their own strength There are a number of people like this. Hospitalized individuals, for one. Special education students are another. People who haven’t found their voice yet and don’t know how to be heard are one more.

These people benefit from having an advocate- somebody to stand up for them and somebody to show them the way. The Strength tarot card may remind you to be the strength that these people need. People who do this are often the unsung heroes of the world who may not get the recognition they deserve. Therefore, they don’t do it for recognition. They do it because it is what needs to be done. In terms of tarot, the Moon reveals hidden aspects of a thing or a situation. The Moon can be tricky though. Be careful about trusting it. What it reveals may not always be true or accurate. The Moon can be convincing, although it may be deceitful.

Think of it this way, have you ever been really tired? While you are really tired, you are expected to make big decisions. Are these decisions that you are making the most sound ones you could be making? Your brain is probably not working at optimum power and you are making these decisions based on worries and fears that a not -tired mind would not be facing. After some good rest, you would probably see the situation in another light and your decisions would be more sound.

Think about it. Have you ever gone to bed with a big worry on your mind? How did that worry effect your sleep? Did you sleep at all? Maybe you were able to grab a few hours sleep despite the heaviness of your thoughts. When you woke up, did you feel any better about the worry? You may wake up to the discovery of a solution or at least with a sense of it’s not as bad as you thought. A tired and fretful mind cast moon shadows. Remember that when your brain feels overwhelmed. The Fool: See What Really Matters

The Fool Tarot Card: To be Enlightened

The Fool is on the way to Enlightenment. Perhaps the Fool is already enlightened. It could be he’s been down the path already, reached the World, and now he is on a new journey, If the first journey was to become enlightened, maybe now he journeys to spread the wisdom of what he has learned to help others on their path.

To be enlightened means to be aware. It means to be aware of the interconnectedness of all things. It is to see how your own actions, words, and attitudes ripple outward and affect others. It is to be aware how others’ actions also ripple out and affect others, including yourself. It is to intuit the feelings and general disposition of others and to temper your actions around them accordingly.

To be enlightened is to see and understand what really matters, and how so much of what most people do think matters, does not. To be enlightened means to differentiate between what matters and what is mere social conditioning.

To be enlightened means to spot what others want and expect you to believe and what is actual truth. To be enlightened means to understand the motives that drive other people to push their ideas and their wants and desires onto you. That is, to understand what they gain by manipulating you into believing what is best for them even if in reality, it is completely worthless.

To be enlightened means to stand firm in what you know to be the truth no matter how anybody tries to convince you of a truth you know to be a lie. To be enlightened means to be unwavering in your own convictions. It means to see beyond the extent that others see into many other worlds and other truths. It is to do this no matter how convincing the argument is to not do it.

It takes a true Fool to become enlightened. A Fool will surrender the ego and accept when they need to alter their course. If they do not alter their course, they will likely veer from the light they are following. The Fool knows that to get where they are going, many course corrections will be necessary. They cannot stay so stuck in their head that they don’t see when the path is no longer under their feet. They ask for guidance and accept it when it comes. —Jim Larsen
