The Temperance Tarot Card: Why We Feel the Way We Do

When you think of Temperance card of tarot, the idea that a variety of elements are combing together to create a single effect may come to mind. The question then becomes, how exactly did any particular combination of elements come to together to create any particular outcome?

Consider for example how you feel during any given time period. Feeling good? Feeling great? Feeling sad? Maybe you are just not quite feeling right. You just feel off somehow and are trying to figure out why. There are a number of factors that may be contributing to this. The weather, for one. If it is sunny and nice, you might feel one way. However, if it is damp and rainy you might feel another. Another is, how did you sleep last night? If you slept well, you will feel one way. If you slept poorly, you will feel another way. Another factor is, what have you eaten lately? Something nourishing that uplifts you, or something junky that brings you down? What emotional or physical concerns are at play? Any combination of these factors can have an impact on how you are feeling, and the change of one can have an impact on you overall.

Our feelings can at times be easy to articulate. Good news or bad news can have a measurable impact. A change in circumstances can as well. However, during those times when we simply cannot articulate our feelings, it can be worthwhile to consider how Temperance is at play and examine the various factors have combined to create the whole of how we are at that moment. — Jim Larsen

Temperance Tarot Card: Blending the elements perfectly

Where does art come from? Creativity? Genius? It comes from seeing the inter-connectivity of different things, different elements. It is to see what could be there, when nothing is. It is to see, if this or that were added, that something new and amazing could be the result. What elements can you combine to create a work that has not been created before? To get it perfect, Temperance is required. You will want to get it just right. Not too much of one thing or another, but just the right blending. True genius is not in going overboard on any one element, but putting all the elements together in just the perfect way. — Jim Larsen

Temperance: Finding Harmony Within

Temperance Tarot Card: Take things a minute at a time

The piece of you that is Temperance is that piece of you that seeks harmony within. It seeks to not be overwhelmed. It does not want to feel like it is drowning in any sort of physical, emotional, spiritual or energetic way. These things can happen. Sometimes we have so much coming at us or placed on our shoulders that it feels like we are overtaken by it or are being crushed by it. In these times, we seek to lighten our load. We try to shake off what is excessive and not feel so heavy and overburdened. In order to feel in control, we need to focus on what we can focus on in the minute.

Choose the thing you can do in the minute and do that. The next minute, do the same. Focus your attention on one thing at a time until you no longer feel that sensation of being overwhelmed. This way, all that energy of all that stuff on you is not saturating you and making you feel like you are suffocating. Be careful how much you let yourself take on. Taking on too much can have the negative impact of over-saturating you with unwanted energy. Let the Temperance piece of you create filters and be careful what you take on. — Jim Larsen

Temperance: Are Your Thoughts Too Rigid?

Temperance Tarot Card: Consider all viewpoints

The Temperance Tarot Card shows up sometimes to tell you not to be too rigid in your thinking. Be willing to budge sometimes. Allow for other ideas and viewpoints. For the sake of harmony, listen to what other people have to say, and take into consideration what they think is important. It’s not all about you. It’s about mutual benefit. Consider your viewpoints, and consider their viewpoints. Let these viewpoints blend together to create a whole.

If it’s all just what you think, something is going to be missing. Blend the ideas together, now it is a significant unification. Now it is something worth considering. Now it is something all will get something out of. Remember this about the Temperance tarot card, it is about the blending of energies. Create something new and unified through the collection of different ideas, attitudes, and energies.  –  Jim Larsen

Temperance: You are Not In a Vacuum

Temperance Tarot Card: Notice how your energy effects others

None of us live in a vacuum. We are receptive of the energies that others put out, just as they are receptive of the energy that we ourselves put out. The temperance card of tarot reminds us of this. Take a look at how your actions, reactions, attitude and general disposition effect a situation and the people around you. Do you promote harmony or disharmony? Or are you completely neutral? How do you feel in the crowd? How do you feel in various situations? Are you comfortable or uncomfortable? What is it about the situation that makes you feel this way? Can you pinpoint it?

We can’t always control how others will feel around us. The best we can do sometimes is to try not to put out too much negative energy, and endeavor as we can to not be a downer that is going to make others feel drained. This is to be empowered by the Temperance archetype of tarot.
